Morzine Ski Resort Guide

Skiing in Morzine and the Portes du Soleil

Morzine is one of the most popular ski resorts in the French Alps, perfectly placed in the heart of the vast Portes du Soleil ski area. With 650km of pistes spanning 12 linked resorts across France and Switzerland, including Avoriaz, Les Gets, and Champéry, it’s one of the largest ski domains in the world. The skiing extends from 930m in Morzine to 2,466m at Avoriaz, ensuring both variety and snow-sure terrain higher up the mountain.

The resort is especially well-suited to beginners and intermediates. Across the Portes du Soleil, there are 37 green runs, 123 blue runs, and 110 red runs, making it ideal for family ski holidays and mixed-ability groups. The wide, rolling pistes are perfect for building confidence, while more experienced skiers and snowboarders can test themselves on 30 black runs, the legendary Swiss Wall in Avoriaz, and extensive off-piste routes into Chatel and beyond. Snowboarders also love Morzine for its excellent terrain parks and freeride zones.

Morzine Village

Morzine is a traditional alpine town with real year-round life, unlike many purpose-built resorts. Its streets are lined with wood and stone chalets, boutique shops, and cosy restaurants, all nestled in a charming valley setting. The atmosphere is both intimate and lively, with a welcoming ambience that appeals to families, couples, and groups alike.

Après-Ski and Christmas in Morzine

Après-ski in Morzine is more relaxed than in party capitals like Val d’Isère or St Anton, but it still offers a great choice of lively bars and pubs for those looking to celebrate after a day on the slopes. The resort also has a modern swimming pool complex, ice rink, and plenty of off-slope activities for non-skiers, ensuring everyone is entertained. At Christmas, Morzine transforms into a winter wonderland, with the streets lit by sparkling decorations, festive markets, and torchlit parades. Families especially love the magical atmosphere, with Father Christmas making appearances and special seasonal events adding to the charm. Combined with the traditional chalet architecture and snowy alpine backdrop, it’s one of the most picturesque times of year to visit.

Airport Transfers and Travel to Morzine

One of Morzine’s biggest advantages is its proximity to Geneva Airport, just 80km away. Transfer times are typically around 1 hour 15 minutes, making Morzine one of the most accessible ski resorts in the Alps. This short transfer appeals to families, weekend skiers, and anyone looking to maximise their time on the slopes.

The ease of access does mean the resort can get busy during peak weeks such as Christmas, New Year, and February half-term. However, the convenience and charm of Morzine make it a top choice for both short breaks and full ski holidays.
