As we head towards August, and many of us start to return from our summer holidays, thoughts quickly turn to the impending ski season. Top of the list for many of our clients will be the New Year Ski Holidays, now just 5 months away. So here is our guide to making it a special celebration.
The New Year ski holidays are one of the most popular weeks in the ski season calendar and as a consequence it pays to book early to secure the very best ski chalets for your vacation. With demand exceeding supply for this week, late booking is not an option and the larger, higher ski resorts, particularly the more popular prestigious resorts of Chamonix, Courchevel, Meribel, St Anton, Val d’Isere, Verbier and Zermatt, sell out months in advance. So this is one week you really do have to book early.

This of course depends on where you decide to go. If you select one of the big ski resorts such as Chamonix, Meribel, St Anton, Val d’Isere or Verbier, expect high octane and challenging skiing by day, and big partying off it at night. If luxury and sophistication is our preference, a notch down on the apes-ski scene, but equally as impressive,in other ways is Zermatt, Europe’s highest ski resort for piste skiing, Zermatt offers world class skiing by day, and sophisticated partying still at night.
But there are of course other great places to go during the ski holidays, away from the obvious big ski resorts. The popularity of Ischgl in Austria grows year on year and its nightlife particularly so. Expect a raucous party on New Years Eve here that will last well into the morning. Golden is another with a surprisingly large number of bars, many lively, least of all the most popular week of the season.

Morzine in the Portes du Soleil deserves a particular mention as it offers some great skiing, 625km to be precise, and while not on the scale of the aforementioned ski resorts, nevertheless a good acres-ski nightlife, especially during the New Year celebrations.

But if your idea of a great New Year skiing holiday is something quieter, then never fear, there are plenty of choices for you too. Family skiers love Chatel in France for example for its fabulous skiing in the Portes du Soliel and its very French, picturesque village. La Plagne and Les Arcs in the Tarentaise are also popular with families, offering an extensive range of high altitude skiing.
We love Zermatt, for its traffic free streets, but if there is one place for charm that stands out in our eyes, than it is Zell am See and Kaprun in Austria. Zell am See sits on the lake and offers snow lined walks alongside the often frozen lake, where as Kaprun just above Zell am See has the jaw dropping backdrop of its castle, notwwithstanding high altitude glacier skiing to ensure you are well entertained during the day.

If you are looking to get away with the family over the New Year, and skiing is your priority, how about a La Tania in France. Part of the Three Valleys, you get all the perks of this extensive high altitude ski region, at a fraction of the cost.

Being one of the most popular week in the ski calendar, the closer we get, the harder it is to find the chalet you are looking for without trawling through many options, often finding the one you want, only to call and find that it is no longer available. That is why here at Chalet ski Holidays we have made it simple, just click on our New Year Ski Holidays page or this link to get the latest ski chalets available.
Enjoy the rest of the summer and we look forward to see you skiing in your favourite ski resort for the New Year ski holidays.
